Manalapan Yacht Club Officers’ Meeting.
March 2, 2023
The Officers met at The Little Club. Commodore Allan Kaulbach presided. In attendance
were VC Jim Schelter, RC’s Sherman Neff and Bill Harsh, and PC Mike McKinney. FC
Platt Johnson and PC Christine Bucher attended the meeting by telephone.
Treasurer’s Report
RC/Treasurer Neff presented the Treasurer’s report for October through February. He
reported that the club is in good financial condition with $22,746.54 in current assets
and a net income for the year to date of $17,209.98. Accounts receivable is $2,536, of
which just $739 is 31 days or older. All members have now paid their annual dues.
Website Issues
The club has retained a consultant at a very reasonable rate to assist FC Johnson in
administering and improving the website, and assisting members.
Event Beverage Policy
The Officers discussed whether the club needs to adopt a policy regarding beverages
served at club events. Potential issues that would be addressed include whether
members who order top-shelf liquor are unfairly increasing the cost of events for all
members and whether members who do not drink alcoholic beverages should be
required to share in the expense of liquor and wine served at club events. Points made
in favor of adopting a policy included reducing the high cost of liquor at club events and
providing equity for non-drinking members. Points made in opposition included whether
there is any real member dissatisfaction with the current arrangement, the mechanics of
implementing the policy and whether the policy would be perceived as reducing the
quality of club events. The Officers will continue to discuss the issue further at
upcoming meetings with the goal of introducing any changes at the beginning of the next
club year.
Membership
Secretary Harsh reported that the Officers and PC’s have voted to admit Richard and
Barbara Couch, and Morgan Gerhold and Marty Johnson. Welcome letters and invoices
for initiation fees and dues have been mailed. VC Schelter presented the application of
Dennis and Martha Perry. Secretary Harsh will circulate the application for a vote of the
Officers and PC’s.
The Officers reaffirmed that they are open to entertaining additional applications for
membership.
The Officers confirmed that a single negative vote is sufficient to deny a membership application.
An Officer or PC who does not vote is considered to have voted yes.
Bylaws
While the club apparently has had bylaws in the past, to date no one has been able to
locate a copy. The Officers will consider adopting a new set of bylaws. RC Neff
provided several examples.
Day at the Races
The reaction of the members to the event at Gulfstream Park was universally favorable.
Upcoming Events
Golf Outing
RC Harsh reported that registration stands at about 32 golfers. Commodore Kaulbach
will include a reminder in his blast and RC Harsh will send a blast with detailed
instructions for registration. RC Harsh will work with RC Berry to arrange for a ship’s
store at the event. Dress is country club golf attire.
Royal Palm Dinner
PC Christine Bucher reported on arrangements for the dinner, which honors past PC’s
and Honorable Ladies. The event will include cocktails and a buffet followed by
entertainment by the Rhythm Chicks. The dress is jacket, no tie.
Annual Meeting
The club has secured a four-bedroom house and 1 to 2 condos at KLAC, which will
allow the Officers to stay onsite. Commodore Kaulbach will send a blast urging
Members to secure accommodations at Ocean Reef as soon as possible, as the club
fills up quickly due to other events. Commodore Kaulbach is working with KLAC and
Ocean Reef to arrange a method for members arriving early to book golf, fishing, and
other activities directly with the clubs.
New Venues
Commodore Kaulbach and RC/Treasurer Neff had a very positive meeting with General
Manager Tom Jordan of Delray Dunes. The Officers will consider whether to host an
event at the club during the next club year..
